Created on an extensive knowledge of plasmas and thin film deposition, PQL was founded in 1998 by plasma expert Dr Mike Thwaites. PQL’s initial drive was to extend the existing technical base of plasma physics and to develop commercial uses of (high intensity) plasmas primarily but not exclusively, for the sputtering of thin film coating and for surface engineering applications.
PQL consists of a small team of scientists and engineers working on a number of plasma based projects. Early success has been achieved with PQL's high density plasma technology for high target utilisation sputtering (HiTUS). Applications have been demonstrated for computer media storage and retrieval, optical filter manufacture for DWDM, photonics and for precision optics.
In 1999 PQL achieved a DTI SMART Feasibility Award to investigate the growth of small grain chromium. Having completed the project in 75% of the scheduled time, PQL has now gained a SMART Development Award to commercialise the process. As a result of its speed of response to problem solving, a number of companies, including large multinationals, have requested? PQL's assistance to develop new products and processes in the use of high density plasmas for thin film coatings and associated applications. PQL also has strong collaborative arrangements with leading academic centres of excellence. PQL's Patented high density plasma deposition system provides unparalleled control over the sputtering process, resulting in thin film coatings that give significantly enhanced characteristics and properties over conventional methods - see our Technology Page for detailed benefits.? PQL's novel high density plasma-assisted sputtering system is an extremely cost effective upgrade as it can be readily retrofitted to many existing sputtering systems.
PQL is continually seeking to identify new applications for its proprietary technology and has now added the new Plasma Quest S400 Development Sputtering Unit to its portfolio.? The first unit is now available and we would welcome enquiries for further information.
